The Misfit of Demon King Academy

For this anime to be so ordinary, it’s pretty engaging and does a lot of things well. If I gave you the rest of the title, “History’s Strongest Demon King Reincarnates and Goes to School with His Descendants,” one, you’d think I made that up, and two, you’d pretty much know the gist of the story. Or, almost all of […]

Kiznaiver

This show tries to be so many different things. While dealing with the philosophical and psychological, it is at times comedy, drama, action, and finally, romance. There are some interesting parts of this show, then there are some ordinary parts. I think this inability to truly be one thing, or at least to stick to what works for it, causes […]

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Magical girl anime is bright, colorful, and super exuberant! Giving little girls something really fun and happy to enjoy during their middleschool years, magical girl genre is all about excitement, kawaii, and happiness! Think this is another iteration of that? Nope. Think again.

Noblesse

This one felt a little different initially, and after a little research after I completed watching the series, I found why. While this particular production was Japanese, the series originated in Korea. Initially I felt this had promise, but it dwindled down into ordinary characters, subpar story, and decent artwork. Overall disappointed.

Monogatari

This is the greatest anime I’ve ever experienced, without question. There are so, so many things that are great about this series. It transcends this artform. From amazing artwork, to exceptional storyline, to the massive and tasteful swings between the comedic and the utterly heartbreaking, and above all, the magnificent character design and execution, this is a top 5 anime […]

Durarara!!

What’s with that name? It’s just a big jumble of sounds! But you’re right, it is just a jumble of sounds, like the rumble of a powerful engine on a black sportbike just before it zooms away into countless mysteries and strange encounters with the world of humans. This series has a multitude of characters, most of who are pretty […]

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

I love the name of this anime. Without a doubt one of the best names I’ve encountered. That and its fame in animedom is why I decided to finally watch it some time back. But this anime does not rank highly on my list. There are too many unnecessary plot twists that attempt to explain every little mystery, and it […]

Tonikawa: Over the Moon for You

This is a masterpiece! This is a magnificent mixture of slice of life and rom-com and a little mystery and total cuteness! This show is full of heartwarming moments and beautiful characters. A beautiful opening too. It’s so simple yet so sweet, I looked forward to this every week when it came out. This is the feel-good champion of Fall/Winter […]

Black Lagoon

Sex. Guns. Revy. Did I mention Revy? While I watched the opening and ending (every episode, very unusual for me) and I kept noting that Revy was so prominently featured–indeed, she’s the only character in the ending sequence–I began to wonder if there was some great secret surrounding her that would be revealed. If you haven’t seen it and plan […]

Golden Time

Golden Time is a slice of life/romance genre anime, featuring a fairly small amount of great characters, a simple plot, and fine artwork. I very much enjoyed watching it. I would not rank it as high as some similar anime I’ve seen, but it was still quite good and enjoyable.

KonoSuba

Explosion! Useless! Steal! Purification! Kazumaaaaa!!!! That can tell this story to pretty much anyone who’s seen any part of this show. The beloved anime of animes. “KonoSuba” is of course a shortened version of the full Japanese title, which contains the words “kono subarashii sekai” (“this wonderful/amazing world”), and so has come to be known by this simple appellation. And […]
