Combine Monster with FLCL, sprinkle with a little Jojo, plop it in the middle Prohibition-era New York City, and voila! you have Baccano!
Yuri is one of the most interesting genres in anime. It’s not new, but it feels like it has the most unexplored territory, in a genre sense. Romance literature spans a spectrum from drama to comedy, but yuri (and yaoi) alter that established spectrum. If the romance spectrum spans in two dimensions, yuri and yaoi expand it into a third […]
Youkai! Anime is full of these traditional Japanese legends! From creatures like the nine-tailed kitsune to kappa to bakeneko to yuuki onna, so many of these mythical creatures have appeared in many different anime in as many different forms and roles. Often we don’t even realize they’re youkai! And that’s what makes it fun! Whether you’re a youkai enthusiast or […]
Ah the joys of discovering the meaning of love! In the world of anime, there’s no shortage of stories and characters designed around this eternal quest. On one end of the spectrum you have Violet Evergarden, which is pretty, happy, heartfelt, sweet, and good, full of humanity and life. On the other end of the spectrum you have Happy Sugar […]
This anime is extraordinarily brutal and I’m not completely sure why.
The ultimate villain in all the history of anime! Feel free to argue with me on that, but I know a lot of people will agree with me. What a winding tale of mystery and humanity! Old by today’s standards, this series is still probably the best example of mystery and suspense in the history of anime, rivaled by few […]
Karamiatte, ubaiatte, damashiatte, sarashiatte, motomeatte, kuruiatte!
It’s playtime! Today’s game is Word of the Day! And today’s word is: REPROBATE.
This is one messed up anime! But it’s a great kind of messed up!
This was bad. Poorly conceived, poorly executed, and ugly. I never criticize a real effort to try something new and different, to try to move the world of anime into new territory. But this was not a good effort. The result is unappealing at best, atrocious at the worst. I don’t recommend spending your time on this show.
I think Jujutsu Kaisen was trying to break new ground. Partly because of that, I don’t fully know what to think of it yet, as it has just ended S1 as of this writing (March 2021). But I do know one thing about it for certain. It was really good.
I’ll make this quick, because this anime is that type of show that’s really only about one thing. Or two things, I guess I should say….
Imagine if you were hired to tutor five identical quintuplets!
I saw the word “sing” and I stopped. That was a terrible mistake! For those who follow me regularly, you know one of my least favorite anime genres is music. So I avoided this show during the Spring 2020 season. One day, I simply decided to watch it anyway. I don’t even know why. I just clicked the link and […]
If you thought Death Note when you first read this, you’d be wrong. If you thought Death Parade, you’d be wrong. If you thought George Gershwin or Freddy Mercury, you’d be wrong, but I like you. If you thought this was just another isekai anime, you’d be right and you’d be wrong.
